Sara Dumit awarded $1,000 CCHPS Scholarship

USTUR/College of Pharmacy PhD student, Sara Dumit, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Columbia Chapter of the Health Physics Society (CCHPS). Her application for this scholarship included a 1,000 word essay on “Health Physics as a Profession.”

USTUR/COP PhD student gives three presentations in March

The first was a seminar presentation given to College of Pharmacy faculty and students as a part of the college’s graduate research seminar class. Ms. Dumit summarized her work to fit urine and lung data from USTUR case 0785 using ICRP’s biokinetic models. » More …

Lecture for Internal & Environmental Dosimetry Class

In March, Maia Avtandilashvili provided a 2-hour lecture to students in WSU’s Internal and Environmental Dosimetry class (ENVR_SCI 523). Dr. Avtandilashvili introduced students to the Integrated Modules for Bioassay Analysis (IMBA) internal dosimetry software, and gave examples of how IMBA can be used as a tool to estimate radionuclide intakes from bioassay data such as urinalysis or in-vivo body count results.

Lecture and Lab Class for Radiation Instrumentation Students

In December 2015, Dr. George Tabatadze provided a 2-hour lecture and 3-hour laboratory practice to students in the Radiation Instrumentation class (ENVR_SCI 520). The class was offered by the Department of Environmental Sciences as part of WSU Tri-Cities’ Graduate Certificate Program in Radiation Protection. The topic of the lecture was solid-state charged particle detectors.

Dr. Tabatadze Gives Presentation at Measurements Conference

Tabatadze RRMC 2016The USTUR’s George Tabatadze and Elizabeth Thomas attended the 61st Annual Radiobioassay and Radiochemical Measurements Conference (RRMC) in Iowa City, IA, October 25 – 30. The USTUR laboratory recently analyzed a MAPEP soil sample to validate the Registries’ tissue analysis protocol for high-fired plutonium oxide. Dr. Tabatadze presented the results of this effort at the meeting.

Registrant Newsletter Mailed

Each year, the USTUR mails a newsletter to living Registrants, and to the next-of-kin of those Registrants who have already passed away. This year’s newsletter summarized plans for the USTUR’s upcoming 50th anniversary, visits from DOE officials, recently published research, and a new SAC member, and information about the new Manhattan Project National Historical Park.
